First Friday of Great Lent

Psalm 140 (Tone 5)

O Lord, I have cried out to You: hear me. Hear me, O Lord, O Lord, I have cried out
to You: hear me give heed to the voice of my supplication when I cry out to You.
Hear me, O Lord!

Let my prayer rise like incense before You, and the lifting up of my hands
like an evening sacrifice. Hear me, O Lord.

Set a guard, O Lord, before my mouth
and a portal around my lips.

Incline my heart away from evil dealings,
from finding excuses for sinful deeds.

In the company with men who work iniquity
let me not partake of what they choose.

May a just man chasten me with justice and reprove me;
may the oil of the wicked never touch my head.

Yet even then shall I pray for their welfare.
Their rulers were swallowed near the rock.

My words will be heard, for they were sweet. As a lump of clay is broken
on the ground, so their bones were strewn near the grave.

To You, O Lord, my eyes are lifted up;
In You have I hoped; let not my soul be lost.

Keep me from the snare that was set up for me
and from the stumbling-blocks of wicked men.

The wicked shall fall into their own nets
while I remain alone until I can escape.

Sticheron 1
For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;
and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

Come, O faithful, let us do the works of God;* let us walk with dignity as in the light
of day;* let us cease making accusations unjustly;* let us remove the obstacles
of scandal we have placed in the path of each other;* let us heed the need and suffering of our neighbor;* that the gifts of the Spirit may grow in us.*
Let us approach Christ in repentance, saying:** O our God, have mercy on us.

Sticheron 2

Praise the Lord, all you nations; proclaim His glory all you people.

Come, all you friends of the martyrs;* let us rejoice in spirit and celebrate.*
Today, the martyr Theodore sets before us a spiritual banquet,* bringing joy to our hearts and so we cry out to him:* Rejoice, for you gave your mortal body over to torment for the sake of Christ our God. * Rejoice, for in many dangers you proved to be a valiant soldier of the heavenly army.* Therefore, we pray to you, O glory of the martyrs:** Intercede for the salvation of our souls.

Sticheron 3

Strong is the love of the Lord for us; eternally will His truth endure.

O thrice-blessed Theodore, we honor your name, meaning “the gift of God”.*
By your deeds you became a ray of divine brightness, illuminating all creation;*
you became more powerful than the fire whose flame you quenched;* and you crushed the head of the deceitful serpent.* Therefore, Christ has crowned you with the crown of victory.* Now that you enjoy divine favor, O holy and great martyr,**
pray fervently to God for the salvation of our souls.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
now and forever and ever. Amen.

The Enemy used the apostate emperor as his servant against the people of God,*
who were purifying themselves with fasting,* by trying to defile them with tainted food from idol-worship.* But you foiled this plan, by appearing in a dream to the bishop
of that time* and warned him of the wicked plan of the tyrant.* In our commemoration of this past miracle, * we offer you prayers of thanksgiving* and acknowledge you
as our protector.* We beseech you, O holy Theodore,* to preserve us from the evil designs of the Enemy,** by interceding with God for us.

1st Prokeimenon, Tone 5

First Wednesday of Great Lent

Psalm 140 (Tone 8)

O Lord, I have cried out to You: hear me. Hear me, O Lord, O Lord, I have cried out
to You: hear me give heed to the voice of my supplication when I cry out to You.
Hear me, O Lord!

Let my prayer rise like incense before You, and the lifting up of my hands
like an evening sacrifice. Hear me , O Lord.

Set a guard, O Lord, before my mouth
and a portal around my lips.

Incline my heart away from evil dealings,
from finding excuses for sinful deeds.

In the company with men who work iniquity
let me not partake of what they choose.

May a just man chasten me with justice and reprove me;
may the oil of the wicked never touch my head.

Yet even then shall I pray for their welfare.
Their rulers were swallowed near the rock.

My words will be heard, for they were sweet. As a lump of clay is broken
on the ground, so their bones were strewn near the grave.

To You, O Lord, my eyes are lifted up;
In You have I hoped; let not my soul be lost.

Keep me from the snare that was set up for me
and from the stumbling-blocks of wicked men.

The wicked shall fall into their own nets
while I remain alone until I can escape.

Sticheron 1
For with the Lord there is mercy, and with Him there is plentiful redemption;
and He shall redeem Israel from all its iniquities.

While fasting bodily, O faithful,* let us also fast in spirit.* Let us loosen every bond
of injustice;* let us tear apart the strong chains of violence;* let us rip up all unjust assertions;* let us give bread to the hungry and welcome the poor and homeless
to our houses,** that we mat receive from Christ, our God, His great mercy.

Sticheron 2

Praise the Lord, all you nations; proclaim His glory all you people.

What glory or honor* can fittingly be ascribed to the saints?* They bowed their heads beneath the sword for You,* the One Who left the heavens and came down.* They shed their blood for You,* the One Who took upon Himself the form of a servant.* By imitating Your poverty* they humbled themselves even unto death.* Through their prayers, O Lord, have mercy on us,** according to the abundance of Your mercy.

Sticheron 3

Strong is the love of the Lord for us; eternally will His truth endure.

By his virtues, Elijah ascended in the divine chariot,* and by his fasting he was carried
to the heights of heaven in glory.* Strive, O my humble soul, as he did,* fast and shed all evil, malice, envy, and corrupting luxury* so that you may be delivered
from the eternal pain of death* and cry out to Christ:** O Lord, glory to You.

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit,
now and forever and ever. Amen.

O divine apostles,* fervent intercessors for the world and defenders of the faithful,* because you have the boldness to intercede for us before Christ our God, * we beseech you that we may pass this solemn time of the Fast untroubled* and receive that grace of the consubstantial Trinity.** O great and glorious preachers, pray for our souls.

1st Prokeimenon, Tone 5
It is You, O Lord, Who will take us in Your care and protect us forever
from this generation.
Verse: Help, O Lord, for good people have vanished;
truth has gone from the sons of men.
It is You, O Lord, Who will take us in Your care and protect us forever
from this generation.

First Reading – Genesis 1:24-2:3

2nd Prokeimenon, Tone 6
Look at me, answer me, O Lord my God; look at me, answer me, O Lord my God.
Verse: How long, O Lord, will You forget me? How long will You hide Your face?
Look at me, answer me, O Lord my God; look at me, answer me, O Lord my God.
